Better To Die In North Africa Than Being Frustrated By Nigerian Authorities – Returnees From Libya
Better To Die In North Africa Than Being Frustrated By Nigerian Authorities – Returnees From Libya.
Some of the indigenes of Edo State who are returnees from Libya has gone back to North Africa, stating that they couldn’t cope with Nigerian authorities and were been frustrated in Nigeria.
They also made it known that some returnees would flee to Libya in spite of the harsh maltreatment given to them.
They said projects provided through the Nigerian Government hardly ever get to the intended beneficiaries and advised International Organization of Migration, IOM, the European Union and other humanitarian agencies to withdraw their welfare assistance with the Nigerian Government in sending aid to them.
According to Iluobe Ehis, who returned last year, she said,
What I have to tell the EU-IOM is that they should please, not partner with the government or any other agency in Nigeria.
If there is any project you have for the returnees, please do it fast. We heard that some money was set aside to empower us but till now we have not seen anything since we finished our training last year.
Another returnee who identified himself as Collins said,
Talking about reintegration, up till today nothing has been done. They trained us last year but the grants they promised us have not been given”.
The returnees spoke in Benin-City, Edo state at a ceremony organized by IOM to launch and hand over a Migrant Resource Centre MRC to the Federal Government.
Government officials who were present during the programme organized for the returnees include:
- The Minister of Labour and Productivity – Dr. Chris Ngige.
- The Secretary to the Government of the Federation – Boss Mustapha (represented by Mrs. Roseline Obiechine).
- The Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons – Hajia Sadia Umar Farouk.
